Hello guys! Just finished first round of continual assessments in Medical School Year 2. Its quite crazy. its like A levels like that. there is really so much to study like all the viruses and all the drugs and all the immunity system. pretty interesting but really taxing on the brain. Next round is coming in January. pretty fast eh? and we end school on 5th december. break to january. what a short break! when everyone else in NUS has long long breaks. anyway, its fun. haha. next up will be the asean university games in KL from 11th dec to 20+dec where i will be running the 5km and 10km. my first time runnining in a track competiton overseas. i am so noob!! hope i dun get lapped.
Anyway a short report on the ABG.
The swim was really shallow! its like 300m out and we can still stand and its still waist levels. I was in the second pack during the swim, quite happy with it as i was feeling really comfortable with my new stroke. anyway, some athletes decide to jump all the way instead of swimming. there are pros and cons. u may step on some sharp rock and may affect the rest of the race. but they say its less tiring but i think that continuing in a rhtymn of swimming is much better. so i swam behind those who keep jumping. it was quite fun swim. my most relaxed swim in a competion ever. Of cus i could have gone faster. but i was happy that my pack of 6 people will togehter and if i go even faster, i may be in no mans land. Swim out was good. ran really hard and got into transition first.
Bike was shiong man. 2 kazakhs, 2 china (one of them olympian), 2 taiwan, 1 syria, 1 iran. cool eh? we were cycling and the pace was really really fast.they kazakhs were determined to catch those infront. apparently there was another small pack of 3 ppl just 30sec ahead. it was tough catching them. I did my part in pulling quite a bit. It was really exciitng. once we caught the pack in front, there was like 11 of us.really really fun. we took turns and drove the pace. some of them wanted to just hide behind but i insisted they get up front and do some work.last lap came and eveyrone kinda slacked off. guess we are all preparing for a killer run.
When the run started, i couldnt really find my engines. looking at my training i could easily figure out why (for me to know), but it was good. I usually am able to really push the pace and drop some people but this time its the opposite. I couldnt really get into gear and steady out. but at least i understand why now. so i am not worried about it. but the run ended with a sprint finish with the syrian but i really was happy with the 12th position. and i had a bad stomach ache and wanted to puke. I am sorry to say that i let him go easily. but it just wasnt my day.
12th place out of 35 to be frank is a good result for me. beat a chinses olympian along the way. keep in mind 80% of these athletes are professionals or in universitie where they dun even need to study just train. but for me here, i am happy to be able juggle medical school and competing with these people.
My team mate, DInah also faired well in a 9th place finish! thats really really good for her 3rd race!!!
